Getting Students Involved in Statistics, Probability, Graphing & More.

ALL IN ONE

Statistics, Probability, Classroom Management, Scatter Plots, Student Engagement, & Graphing!

The first year I taught scatter plots, statistics, and probability, I kept wondering how I could engage my students fully into the lesson and assist them in getting back into the routine of school after long holiday breaks.  After much thought, I came up with my 'Time to Get Ready' Lesson for all four of my classes.  I was nervous and unsure how the students would respond to the lesson, yet, at the end of that school year, this was one of my favorite project lessons the students accomplished that year.

This lesson brings together Cooperative Learning, Team Building, Statistics, Probability, Scatter Plots, Classroom Management, and Student Engagement! Although this lesson is geared towards middle school students, it may be used for upper elementary and high school students also. It's a perfect lesson to start any time of year, especially in December and through January or even during the months surrounding Spring Break.

This lesson incorporates students collecting data over 2 months every morning prior to our unit lessons. After the 2 month time frame, we spent 3 full class days completing this lesson. When we finished collecting data, we started our unit on Statistics and Probability.

All of my students were more engaged in this lesson since it directly related to them and the data we took as a class over several months. It not only became an effective classroom strategy, but also, a great lesson for my students!

Cooperative Learning ~ Bring Students Together

Engage Math Students in a Read, Write, & Research project that they Debate!

Cross curricular lessons are fantastic, because they can incorporate so much in one lesson that assists students understanding on how subjects intertwine.

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Math-Read-Write-Debate-Lesson-Editable-Middle-School-High-School-1966476

The "Read, Write, Math Project Lesson" incorporates all of these tasks!

This lesson brings Language Arts, Collaboration, Evaluation, and Math together.

Engaging students in collaboration assists them in team work, cooperative learning, self evaluation, peer evaluation, and more that they will utilize throughout their life.
Bring it all together with this unit!

.............................................................................................

This assignment is completely {editable} to suit your class and how you have students turn in the assignment.

With this activity you may have students write about the articles and topic I included or change it to the math unit you are currently teaching.
I suggest allowing a minimum of 3 class days to complete a lesson of this scope - a day to research and review the lesson with students, a day for students to collaborate, then a day to debate.  If you chose this option I'd have the students work for a week on the project at home.  I allowed 2 weeks for students to complete this project.  We spent 4 class days on the lesson and students executed the written portion during one class day while finishing the written portion for home work.

Note ~ I allowed 2 weeks for students to complete this project.  Students who loved writing and excelled in written communication loved that they could bring that talent into math.  For a few students I even extended the lesson and asked them to write poems, or a short story on their choice topic for math after they had completed this assignment.

This product may be used for any 8th grade classroom or for reteaching/review in 9th grade math. Whether you are using common core or other standards, this bundle is a great resource for 8th grade or Pre-Algebra students. The bundle also INCLUDES several reteaching/review files.

When I've taught several 8th grade students I found that I had to go back and review or reteach a few skills such as positive & negative integers, properties of addition/multiplication, multiplication facts and more. Therefore, I've included a few products that may be set up in 'review' stations or covered in a day of 'review' and placed in interactive notebooks so your students are more able to complete the operations they need to complete in math to be successful.

Subtracting Negative Integers: "Why do you get a Positive Answer?"

Inquiring Minds: "Why do you get a Positive Answer?"

My students had a hard time understanding why you get a positive answer when you subtract a negative in some situations.... for example 2 - -5 = 7.

"Keep - Change - Change", just did not make sense to them (of course they used the K-C-C method and memorized it - but it just didn't make sense to them).

I always remembered the rules and never questioned why this happens.  I loved that some of my students (especially one) really wanted to know "why" and wanted eagerly to understand this situation.

Therefore, I explained the hot air balloon method of where the balloon rises as you throw out (minus) a negative load.  Then recently thinking about it some more... I came up with the 'Ladder Method' which I do believe they would understand.  This integrates vertical graphing!  (YEAH, integrating positives, negatives, graphing, understanding).  I know the students would really understand this method of subtracting negative integers.  Below is a pictorial representation I drew explaining the method.

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Positive-Negative-Integer-Subtraction-LADDERS-More-1984591

 ©2015 M Moore, Moore Resources

As seen in the visual representation above that I drew, the figure is on 2 with 5 negative bags and 2 + bags.... it can only go up 2 and the -5 bags are keeping you there.... if you subtract the 5 - bags then you can go up to rung 7 on the ladder.

For example -9 - -5 = -4, the Ladder Method still works....  You would be standing on -9 rung of the ladder and release -5 bags, therefore, you can go up to -4.

I'm sure I'm not the first person to think of this idea or utilize this method with their class...yet enjoy that I came up with it too, great teaching minds think to engage and teach our students!  I hope this method assists you with teaching Positive & Negative Integers.
